What is a serpentine belt?

A serpentine belt is a belt that is attached through a series of pulleys connected to essential parts of the engine and gives them power. These parts include the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning and more. The serpentine belt is made of extremely heavy-duty reinforced rubber that can take on a large amount of work and withstand high temperatures. It has grooves on one side that attach to the different pulleys and is constantly rotating as you drive.

The serpentine belt should last around 50k-100k miles depending on the rubber materials in its composition. Overtime, the serpentine belt wears and gets older. It’s important to be on the lookout for any signs of serpentine belt deterioration. Be sure to visually inspect your serpentine belt on a regular basis, such as every time you get your oil changed. Check the belt for any cracks, tears or separation along either side of the belt. Our team of mechanics here at Speck Buick GMC are happy to inspect your serpentine belt to keep it in good, working condition.
